Continuing its long-standing commitment to supporting children and families in need, the Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg recently presented $550 Walmart gift cards to three Montgomery County schools as part of its ongoing Clothe a Child and School Supplies programs.
Oliver Lewis, MCPS Administrator of Family Engagement and a Kiwanis member, joined fellow Kiwanian Ernie Wade in presenting the gift cards. Receiving the cards were Gene Jones, Principal of Christiansburg High School; Ann Lawson, School Counselor at Montgomery Central; and Chris Hewitt, Principal of Belview Elementary School.
These programs, launched several years ago in Christiansburg-area schools, provide immediate assistance to students who need clothing, shoes, school supplies, and other essentials. The initiative operates as an ongoing partnership: when a school exhausts the funds on its gift card, the Kiwanis Club replenishes it to ensure continuous support. The Club contributes $500 per card, and Walmart generously adds an additional $50.
Funding for service projects like these comes from the Club’s annual fundraising efforts, including the Kiwanis Wilderness Trail Festival, held each year on the third Saturday in September.
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Since receiving its charter in 1949, the Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg has proudly served the local community through programs that address real and immediate needs.
