Each year, our club helps make the holidays brighter for local children by providing more than $150 per child in gifts and essentials. School counselors identify families who may benefit, confirm interest in participating, and gather a wish list from each child along with clothing and other needs from parents or guardians. This effort typically supports 60–70 children.
Kiwanis members personally sponsor children, using their own funds (about $150 per child) to purchase requested items. The celebration culminates in our annual Christmas Party, where Santa delivers wrapped gifts to each child and families enjoy a warm pizza dinner together.
A Morning at Walmart
A few weeks before the party, Kiwanians meet at our local Walmart early in the morning to purchase toys. The line of shopping carts at checkout is always impressive—and it’s especially fun watching some of our senior members decode the latest toy requests!
After shopping, gifts are delivered to the Early Childhood Education Class at Christiansburg High School, where student members generously wrap the presents for the big day.
Our Thanks
We are grateful to Walmart for the discount it provides and the staff support that helps this event run smoothly. We are also deeply thankful to Kiwanian Dennis Hunter, who coordinates this massive effort year after year.
