Kiwanis is an international civic organization that works through local clubs to strengthen communities at the grassroots level. Around the world, Kiwanis clubs share a common mission — improving the lives of children — while responding to the specific needs of their own towns and neighborhoods. Our local club is part of that global network, but our focus is right here at home: identifying community needs, organizing volunteers, and taking practical action that makes a visible difference.

We are proudly nonpartisan and nonsectarian. We are not affiliated with any religious organization, and we do not promote any political agenda. Our focus is service — especially service that improves the lives of children and families in our community. We come together, not for profit or politics, but for the good of the community.

Membership is open to adults of any belief, race, gender, or sexual orientation. What unites us is not background or ideology, but a shared commitment to making our community stronger. If you care about helping children thrive, supporting local families, and investing your time and energy in meaningful service, you will find a welcoming place here.

Kiwanis works best when people from different walks of life sit at the same table, share a meal, and then roll up their sleeves together. Community improvement is not a spectator sport — it is something we build, one project and one relationship at a time.

A Quick 90-Second Overview

Mission and Values

The Kiwanis Mission

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.

The Kiwanis Vision

Kiwanis will be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them, and provide the support they need to thrive.

Motto: Serving the children of the world

The Kiwanis Objectives

  • To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.
  • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.
  • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
  • To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.
  • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Our Club

The Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg has about 80 active members. While we are currently made up largely of older white males (with a handful of women and minorities), we are actively working to broaden participation through targeted recruitment.

Most meetings take place in the function room of the Holiday Inn in Christiansburg, except during the summer months when we one meeting a month we gather at our picnic shelter at Kiwanis Park. Please see our calendar for the detailed schedule. At a typical Thursday evening dinner meeting, about 35 members are present.

Meetings are structured as follows:

  • 6:30–7:00 — Dinner
  • 7:00–7:30 — Guest speaker (occasionally)
  • 7:30–8:00 — Business meeting
  • 8:00–8:20 — Board meeting (if needed)
