A split-screen widescreen image illustrating the evolution of Kiwanis Park. On the left: A sepia-toned, vintage scene from the 1920s showing a simple, open baseball field. Instead of a grandstand, the background features an open landscape with a biplane flying overhead and a classic wooden "Kiwanis Field" scoreboard. In the foreground, spectators in period-appropriate attire and fedoras sit on modest wooden bleachers. On the right: A vibrant, modern-day version of the park. The field is professionally manicured with lush green grass and bright white chalk lines. A modern electronic scoreboard with the "Kiwanis" name stands in the distance. The seating consists of contemporary aluminum bleachers, and a drone flies through the clear blue sky, highlighting the leap in technology and style over the decades.

Kiwanis Park: A Legacy of Community Service

Kiwanis Park is the most significant physical asset of the Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg and a living testament to our club’s history. In 1963, long before the Town of Christiansburg had a formal recreation department, our members recognized a vital need for youth athletics. The Club took action by building two ballfields and founding the Kiwanis Sandlot Program.

“In 1963, the Kiwanis Club founded the first youth athletic programs in Christiansburg.”

In those early years, Kiwanis members did it all: they established the leagues, scheduled the games, provided uniforms, and coached the teams for both Little League and Pony League youth. As the program’s success grew, it expanded to include girls’ sports and adult softball. Over the decades, the Club continued to invest in the facility, adding lights, scoreboards, a playground, and two picnic shelters.

A Modern Community Hub

Today, Kiwanis Park remains a centerpiece of local life. While the Christiansburg Recreation Department now administers the league play and tournaments, the park continues to evolve with the addition of horseshoe pits and batting cages. From hosting the Town’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt to serving as a home for football and baseball, Kiwanis Park stands as a proud reminder of what a dedicated group of volunteers can build for their community.
