Note from Ray Parks, New River Valley Agency on Aging
New River Valley Agency on Aging Request for Input on Service Needs To: Associates of the New River Valley Agency on Aging From: Ray Parks, Executive Director, New River Valley Agency on Aging Subject: 30-Day Public Comment Period for 2027 Area Plan for Aging Services Date: June 4, 2026 Every year, the New River Valley Agency on Aging (NRVAOA) develops a plan for services using the financial resources that we obtain from federal, state, and local governments, along with grant funding, client fees and contributions. We are starting the process for our upcoming program and fiscal year which begins October 1, 2026. Due to limited funding, it is critical that we target our resources toward providing the most essential services for older adults and their caregivers. We greatly value your opinion and ask for your input into the upcoming Area Plan for Aging Services. With a current operating budget of approximately $1.5 million, the Agency provides a variety of services–either directly or through contracted providers. The programs we directly coordinate or subcontract include Access Services, In-Home Services, Nutrition, Disease Prevention, Legal Assistance, Elder Rights, Transportation, and Caregiver Support. These are delivered through: • Home Delivered Meals and Congregate Nutrition through our Friendship Cafes • Health Insurance Counseling/Medicare Fraud Prevention • Information, Assistance, and Referrals to help with finding and accessing needed services and resources • Transportation for Medical Appointments • Homemaker Services (currently has waiting list) • Respite Care (in-home companion or personal care and adult day services to provide relief for full-time informal caregivers) • Care Coordination/Options Counseling • Long-Term Care Ombudsman (for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities) • Elder Abuse Prevention • Health Promotion Activities New River Valley Agency on Aging Request for Input on Service Needs As the designated local lead agency, NRVAOA works closely and connects with other health and human services agencies and has access to a large database of services and providers. We call this the No Wrong Door initiative. Please note: We plan to add Caregiver Training to the list of services provided for next year’s Area Plan. Specific program details are currently under development. Here is the link to the current NRVAOA Area Plan: https://www.nrvaoa.org/documents/FY26%20Area%20Plan%20Final%202026.pdf Feel free to contact us with your ideas, either by sending us an email message or mailing the brief form below. ******************************************************************* Based on the services that the Agency provides, which programs and services do you think are most needed by older adults and caregivers in our region? What other services and supports are needed, but unavailable? Please be aware that adding service categories may require reductions to other, existing services. Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable information that will help with planning for services. Please send your comments by July 6, 2026. E-mail Address: nrvaoa@nrvaoa.org Mailing Address: NRV Agency on Aging 44 Third Street, NW Pulaski, VA 24301 I believe the following services are most needed by older adults and/or caregivers: ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ __________________________________County or City of Residence
