Community Service Hours:

Call to Order
President Perry called the meeting to order. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer led by Charlton.
Approval of Previous Minutes
The minutes of the June 4, 2026, meeting were submitted for approval.
- Motion: Wilson
- Second: Scaggs
The motion passed unanimously.
Program- Lauer introduced our guest speaker, State Senator David Sutterlein, whose district includes Christiansburg; he resides in Roanoke County. The district is large and diverse. Senator Sutterlein serves on several committees, including the Senate Education and Health Committee (where he spends most of his time), as well as the Agriculture, Rules, and Transportation Committees. The Transportation Committee addresses matters such as truck weight limits and speed limits, which he noted is not a favorite committee to serve on. He is the senior Republican on the Education Committee and works to build bipartisan coalitions.
The Senator reported they are in special session working on the two-year budget, with the even-numbered year being the primary budget year. He discussed at length the current budget process, redistricting proposals, voting procedures, and related litigation, including the back-and-forth discussion required to pass bills and finalize the budget. A significant budget issue under consideration involves taxation of data centers. A robust Q&A followed with hearty discussion.
